Hi {Fname},

September / October 2007

What's your plan for survival?

Last month I published the first five keys to employee retention. This month I'm including the next five ideas. These ten ideas are not all encompassing. You know what works best for your corporate culture. Do what you think works best for your company.

Here are the next five ideas:

  • When an employee is failing at work, I ask the W. Edwards Deming question, "What about the work system is causing the person to fail?" Most frequently, if the employee knows what they are supposed to do, I find the answer is time, tools, training, temperament or talent. The easiest to solve, and the ones most affecting employee retention, are tools, time and training. The employee must have the tools, time and training necessary to do their job well - or they will move to an employer who provides them.
  • Your best employees, those employees you want to retain, seek frequent opportunities to learn and grow in their careers, knowledge and skill. Without the opportunity to try new opportunities, sit on challenging committees, attend seminars and read and discuss books, they feel they will stagnate. A career-oriented, valued employee must experience growth opportunities within your organization.
  • A common place complaint or lament I hear during an exit interview is that the employee never felt senior managers knew he existed. By senior managers I refer to the president of a small company or a department or division head in a larger company. Take time to meet with new employees to learn about their talents, abilities and skills. Meet with each employee periodically. You'll have more useful information and keep your fingers on the pulse of your organization. It's a critical tool to help employees feel welcomed, acknowledged and loyal.
  • No matter the circumstances, never, never, ever threaten an employee's job or income. Even if you know layoffs loom if you fail to meet production or sales goals, it is a mistake to foreshadow this information with employees. It makes them nervous; no matter how you phrase the information; no matter how you explain the information, even if you're absolutely correct, your best staff members will update their resumes. I'm not advocating keeping solid information away from people, however, think before you say anything that makes people feel they need to search for another job.
  • I place this final tip on every retention list I develop because it is so key and critical to retention success. Your staff members must feel rewarded, recognized and appreciated. Frequently saying thank you goes a long way. Monetary rewards, bonuses and gifts make the thank you even more appreciated. Understandable raises, tied to accomplishments and achievement, help retain staff. Commissions and bonuses that are easily calculated on a daily basis, and easily understood, raise motivation and help retain staff. Annually, I receive emails from staff members that provide information about raises nationally. You can bet that work is about the money and almost every individual wants more.
Take a look at your organization Are you doing your best to retain your top talent? Employ these ten factors in your organization to retain your desired employees and attract the best talent, too.

As my second term as Chairman of the Board draws to a close, I want to thank you all for supporting our great Chamber! Many great things lie ahead for each of you and for the Chamber. I want to leave you with my two favorite quotes as inspiration -

"Anything the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve" - Napoleon Hill

"Success lies not in being the best but in doing your best" - Anonymous

Best wishes!

Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce
Receives Certification Award

Sari Rotenberg, Chair Elect, Cindy Brief, President
& Michael DiTocco, Chair

The Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce was presented with a Certification Award at the Florida Association of Chamber Professionals Conference (FACP) in Jacksonville at the end of July. The certification assures you, our members, that our Chamber has achieved a level of excellence.

In order to meet the standards required for the Florida Certified Chamber of Commerce designation the Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce had to submit documentation in the following areas: organization, service intent and capacity, professional administration, financial management and Marketing/Public Relations.

Out of 300 statewide Chamber's there are 38 to have received this distinction - and now we are the first Chamber in Broward County!

So feel proud to be a part of our fine organization!

Shelley Wolff
1936-2007

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of our longtime members, Shelly Wolff, the owner of AABS Inspection Service. Shelly was a long time member of the Chamber. He served on the board of directors and in 2001 he won the Small Business Leader of the Year Award

"I am deeply saddened by Shelly's passing," City of Coral Springs Manager, Mike Levinson stated. "One of my most memorable moments as City Manager was the honor and privilege to present the Chamber's Leadership Award to him (actually through his wife and daughter as he had just taken ill). I remember saying at the time that "leaders turn dreams into reality". Shelly helped turn dreams into reality for many of us. He will be sorely missed. The service was a beautiful and most fitting testimony to Shelly by his family and Rabbi Kaplan".

Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce presents $10,000 to
City of Coral Springs to assist with Malcolm Baldridge Award

The Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce proudly presented a check for $10,000 to Vice Mayor Roy Gold, Commissioner Vince Boccard, Commissioner Claudette Bruck, Commissioner Ted Mena and City Manager, Mike Levinson, at the August Wake-Up Breakfast. Vice Mayor, Roy Gold, spoke at the event and expressed his appreciation to the Chamber. The Chamber raised this money through donations from our members and by having a silent/live auction at our July breakfast. Some of the corporate sponsors included Advanced Cable Communications, Al Hendrickson Toyota, Merrill Lynch, PNA, Prudential Florida WCI Realty & Commerce Bank.

Due to the generosity of our members and the leadership of our Auction Committee which included Connie Carberg (Al Hendrickson Toyota), Gemma Pressinger ( Laser Image), Joann Zollo (Forum Publications), Michelle Fitzpatrick (Advanced Cable Communications) and our amazing Chamber staff our silent/live auction event raised over $3500 towards the contribution!

The Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce is proud to support the City of Coral Springs in their continuous effort for quality processes!
