Hi {Fname},

January 2007

THIRD WORLD AMERICA

As we ring in the New Year, we are saddened by the poverty, hunger, homelessness, and despair that blankets our country. We have grown to look a lot like a third world nation. Crime is on the increase, a natural occurrence as more and more people find it impossible to pay their rents, mortgages, taxes, homeowners insurance, food bills, utility payments and the host of other expenses that are on the rise.

Now, more than 60 million Americans live without health insurance. More than a million Americans have been added to the poverty class in the last year. Hunger and food insecurity touch an estimated 200,000 Broward County residents who sacrifice and scrimp on food purchases, substituting high-caloric, low nutrition, filling foods for healthy eating choices. Welcome to Third World America. We urge you not to ignore that plight of our nation and our community.

Sign on to become a "Warrior Against Hunger" @ www.FeedingBroward.org.

Hunger and food insecurity have been growing non stop for five years.

Nearly 35 million people - including 13 million children - in the United States were hungry or living on the edge of hunger in 2002 (the most recent year for which data are available). Since 1999, food insecurity has increased three years in a row, in total by 3.9 million individuals - 2.8 million adults and more than one million children. Overall, 11.1 percent of U.S. households (12.1 million households) experienced food insecurity or hunger in 2002, and black (22 percent) and Hispanic (21.7 percent) households suffered from food insecurity or hunger at double the national average. CFP announces "NEW" development plan for 2007

We want you to know your support does make a difference! Last year, 1.2 million meals were delivered, over 29,000 families received food to feed their kids or their aging parents. Over 75,000 individuals had a daily meal. Rents were paid. Move-in costs were provided to help families facing homelessness avoid that tragic disgrace. So much good is being done 365 days a year here at the Cooperative Feeding Program that we truly are a LifeNet4Families.

The Cooperative Feeding Program does not receive government funding, we are a totally private, non-profit agency that operates solely on the funds and gifts generated by socially conscious individuals, organizations, businesses and foundations. Want to be part of the solution and join us as a "Warrior" in the battle against hunger and provide hope to those in need? Go to www.feedingbroward.org today!. Team up with us and make a difference in 2007.

HOW CAN I HELP?.

For 2007, we are making a number of changes: first and foremost, we are offering different opportunities to increase your giving and secondly, if you respond by April 30 we pledge to solicit you only once in 2007. Plus, you now have the opportunity to respond to our appeal through the CFP Web Site @ www.FeedingBroward.org,

  • Make your one time increased gift on line
  • or by pledging that increased gift, you can be billed each quarter
  • or can have your pledge deducted from your credit card each month.
Hopefully, you can consider an increased gift, knowing you will not be solicited again in our periodic appeals and that you have the opportunity to spread out your payments over the course of the year.

For more information concerning our annual giving programs, "Creating a Legacy" programs, volunteerism, food and clothing drives and empty bowls programs go to our web site at www.feedingbroward.org. Thank you for your consideration and continued support.

A MATTER OF FAITH

The multiplying of the loaves is often a matter of great faith. Faith that the Lord will always provide us with what we need and the community putting hearts and minds to work on making that happen. Such was the faith of Sunshine Cathedral members Penny Loughan and Veralynne Williams who founded the Loaves and Fishes Ministry at the Cathedral. They gathered the food, found the CFP, and through their efforts we have continued to feed the masses. This past year alone, the Loaves and Fishes Ministry has collected in excess of 20,000 pounds of food for the needy of our community.

And that's not all. They raise dollars, collect school supplies, and keep a constant watch on the CFP wish list to make sure they help us achieve our monthly goals. Three cheers for the Sunshine Cathedral. Deacon Marian Cavagnaro and church member Penny Loughan took their service to the next level. Marion joined the board and Penny joined the CFP staff.

Now that's Faith in Action!

A SOUPER IDEA

On a day when the world focuses on football and fun, young people across the country are quietly raising millions to help people who are hungry and hurting. How? Through a program known as the Souper Bowl of Caring, and your group can become part of this grassroots movement. Here's how your congregation, school, club or civic organization can participate in the February 4, 2007 Souper Bowl of Caring:

  1. Plan your Souper Bowl of Caring collection on a day most convenient for your group between January 29 - February 4. Announce the date(s) to your group and ask that each person donate $1. (Some groups also collect non-perishable food items.)
  2. Collect the donations in soup pots and tally the results.
  3. Report your participation on or after Feb. 4 to www.souperbowl.org or call 1-800-358-SOUP(7687). PLEASE REPORT so your participation can be counted in the national total.
  4. Select the Cooperative Feeding Program and deliver your donations DIRECTLY to the charity of your choice.

South Florida Jubilee Chorus - Teddy Bear Brigade

The South Florida Jubilee Chorus, a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, comprised of women from primarily Broward and Miami-Dade counties in South Florida, presented holiday entertainment on December 9, 2006, and decorated their stage with children's books and stuffed animals, purchased privately and contributed by each chorus member. After the show, all the stuffed animal set decorations were donated to The Cooperative Feeding Program who managed to get these lovely new items into the hands of disadvantaged parents, so that their children would enjoy special gifts for the holiday. Learn about upcoming performances and listen to a sample sound clip at their website: www.SouthFloridaJubilee.com.

Whole Foods 5% day, a RECORD DAY FOR CFP!

Thanks to everyone who shopped at the Plantation location of Whole Foods Market on our 5% day.. The day resulted in a record $3,700 coming back to the Cooperative Feeding Program. Many thanks to Briana Madrid, Community Relations Director, pictured here on the right, for offering this great opportunity for CFP.
DCF FOOD DRIVE

Ross Guilder and his sister, Ariel came to do some hands on community service over the school holiday break. The Guilder family has been active supporters of Cooperative Feeding for many years. Recently, Ross celebrated his Bar Mitzvah at Solel Temple and made the decision to donate $2000 to CFP to help those less fortunate. This gesture is a wonderful example of accepting the mitzvahs of being an adult. Ariel also made a donation when she celebrated her Bat Mitvah four years ago. This special tradition is shared by the Chayet family which is friends of the Guilders and members of the Solel Temple.

Incredible recent events at the CFP!
Chris Hetzer, Calvary Chapel

For the recent Holidays, the Refuge (our church here at the Co-Op, sponsored by Calvary Chapel Ft. Lauderdale) had the honor of presenting all of our friends here 2 special meals.

For Thanksgiving we took the event outside and set up 225 seats with decorated tables. For the meal, our Parent Church donated 20 turkeys which we fresh roasted. Combined with other fresh food donations and deserts we fed 400 friends on a beautiful Sunday morning while listening to music and Drama.

. We brought our Christmas meal inside after a full Christmas Service which included Drama and special music. All of our guests were able to come inside, sit down and have true restaurant service as our Refuge team provided waiter service that day. Also of note was our 1-year anniversary of the Refuge on Christmas Eve. How wonderful it has been to bring this opportunity, week-after-week, to the "backlot" at the CFP, Sundays@10:00am!

After 4 months of training our team, our first Celebrate Recovery Step Meeting launched on August 19th at CFP. I am thrilled to report that we are now in our 22nd week and have seen many brothers and sisters freed from both their homelessness and any hurt, habit or hang-up they might have been carrying needlessly. I urge you to check us out any Saturday at 12:00pm in the dining room as we walk through our issues as "FAMILY".
