2007 | A
Day in the Life of CFP When
"L" arrived at CFP it seemed nothing would stop her tears. She'd come to Florida
filled with hope driving an RV filled with her worldly goods. When she was side-swiped
by another car and her vehicle flipped over, all her hope turned to despair. After
a stay in the hospital she learned that her vehicle had been declared "totaled"
by the towing company who assured her the vehicle and her possessions were disposed
of. In a mere moment her home on wheels and its contents had vanished. She tried
to work her way through the system to get help, but doors closed each step of
the way. She arrived at CFP shattered, depressed and homeless. Our social services
division helped. Connecting her with services available to Native Americans and
intervening on her behalf, finally things began to change. "L" stopped back to
report on her progress. She thanked The CFP staff for helping at a time when she
was too overwhelmed to clearly process a plan for her future.
THE
COOPERATIVE FEEDING PROGRAM SCORES BIG WITH VOLUNTEERS AND DONATIONS The
Cooperative Feeding Program in Broward was one of many local charities that opened
its doors to volunteers and contributors during Souper Bowl of Caring 2007. The
Souper Bowl of Caring is a youth-led, grassroots movement of caring, the result
of thousands of young people joining together to fight hunger and poverty in their
communities. Since 1990, $40 million has been raised for charities across the
country. This year over 60 volunteers came to CFP to sort food in our warehouse,
serve in the soup kitchen and make emergency food boxes for families in our food
pantry. Other youth groups and schools organized food drives which collected over
15,000 lbs. of food. University School and the Boys and Girls Club of Broward
each collected over 5,000 pounds of food. Students from Cypress Bay High School
and West Glades Middle held "Empty Bowls Dinners" which generated a combined total
of $2,000. In addition, congregations and individuals made monetary contributions.
Overall, the event was a huge success and we are inspired by the power and passion
of Broward's youth in the fight to end hunger in the America.
| "Getting
Into" One's Work Twenty two student and five adult volunteers from
Grace Baptist Church converged on our parking lot on Saturday afternoon, January
27, to sort food and hygiene products. They also brought a bus load of food that
will feed hundreds of Broward's hungry residents.
| It's
all in a Day's Work! National Honor Society members from Marjory Stoneman
Douglas High School pose for a photo after an afternoon of bagging bread in the
CFP food pantry. The students are conducting a school food drive, the proceeds
of which will benefit CFP families.

Players Won the Hearts of the Homeless Just a few days before Super Bowl
Sunday, NFL players arrived at CFP to serve breakfast, take pictures and sign
autographs. CFP diners enjoyed food and conversation with the players in honor
of Souper Bowl of Caring. |
If
you would like to volunteer at CFP, we are currently seeking volunteers for
the following positions: Bread Pick-Up: We have an immediate
need for an individual or couple willing to pick-up day-old bread and pastries
from Jacaranda Publix (on the corner of University and Sunrise Blvd.) on alternate
Saturday mornings between 7 and 8am and deliver to our Food Pantry at 1 NW 33rd
Terrace in Lauderhill by 8:30am. A valid Florida driver's license is required.
Training and ID badges provided. CFP is also looking for occasional substitutes
for our regular Monday through Saturday bread pick-up drivers. Golf Tournament
Volunteers: You don't have to play golf to be part of an afternoon of sun
and service to those less fortunate. As one of the recipients of the proceeds
from the Construction Association of South Florida Annual Golf Classic fund-raiser,
The Cooperative Feeding Program needs to provide ten (10) volunteers on Thursday,
May 10, from 11am to 6pm at the Ft. Lauderdale Country Club. We need people to
sell raffle tickets, be hole-in-one spotters, help with a silent auction, distribute
literature, organize things, run errands, and generally do whatever needs doing.
Plus, you'll work with and meet some very fine folks. For all volunteer
opportunities, contact: Chris Polzer, Volunteers and Special Events Manager
at (954)792-2328 or chris@feedingbroward.org.

 | "I
feel so much better with a hair cut." These words have been echoed over
the last four years thanks to Mario Betto, Founding President of Hairstylists
for Humanity. He and his team of stylists have been coming to CFP faithfully each
Tuesday morning to trim beards and give haircuts to those who wanted to look good,
but could not afford to do so. During the last four years it is estimated that
over 7000 haircuts were given free of charge by the program. To learn more about
this wonderful charity, check out their website: www.hairstylistsforhumanity.org. |
Feinstein

fighting agencies nationwide using it to help them raise funds during March and
April, 2007. Any donations that you make to The Cooperative Feeding Program from
March 1st to April 30th will get Feinstein money from Rhode Island added to it
- and the more of a donation you send to CFP, the more of the Feinstein $1 million
CFP will get - thanks to you! By making your donation or annual contribution during
this time, you will become partners in what has become the most successful campaign
of all times to fight hunger! These donations can include cash, checks and food
items (that can be valued at $1.00 per item or pound). CFP has many events planned
for March and April, and with the Feinstein Challenge, your contribution can go

BANKING
ON CFP
BankAtlantic,
a long-time supporter of The CFP has pledged to host two "Service & Serving"
days in 2007. The Bank Atlantic team will prepare and serve breakfast to the homeless
and working poor of our community in February and October. In addition, during
this team building event, the crew will stock shelves and make food boxes for
the hungry of our community. BankAtlantic is an on-going supporter of our Serving
& Service Program.
The Jim Moran Foundation has selected The CFP
to receive a grant to further the foundation's mission "to improve the quality
of life for the youth and families of Florida through the support of innovative
programs and opportunities that meet the ever-changing needs of the community."
The CFP serves as a Lifenet 4 families, thus honoring the mission and vision of
The Jim Moran Foundation. The grant will enhance our volunteer services and our
family counseling divisions.
