YOUR CALENDARS
| JUNE
7TH - NATIONAL HUNGER AWARENESS DAY
This
Seeds of Change e-newsletter is dedicated to this special National Hunger Awareness
Day.
God, I'm hungry...
How many times in our lives have we muttered this phrase as our stomach churns
because we have not eaten for a few hours? Our brains get the message and we head
to the closest fast food place or look at our watch to see if it is time to go
home for dinner.
Here at The Cooperative Feeding Program we hear these
words muttered by the hundreds of homeless women and men who line up for a hot
meal each day, seven days a week. Or from the working poor, asking for help as
they simply cannot make ends meet on a minimum wage job, despite working more
than 50 hours a week. Or from the children, when asking for a box of food from
our Emergency Pantry. Or from the homeless 83 year-old lady with schizophrenia
who came in this morning and who needs someone to take care of her in the autumn
of her life.
The truth is today there are tens of thousands of hungry
people in Broward County - and more than half of them are children.
A
CALL FOR ACTION:
On Tuesday, June 7th, please take a brown
bag lunch with you to work and send the money you would have spent on eating out
to The Cooperative Feeding Program. Talk with your friends and colleagues about
hunger in our communities using information from our website .
Get them to brown bag it once a month with you and join our ongoing commitment
to end hunger in Broward County. Please organize a food drive in your office,
community, school, church - we are desperate to raise more food and more funds.
Please
try and join the nation on June 7th in this important day of remembrance of those
who are hungry in this, the richest land on earth. Here in our own neighborhoods
and on our own streets there are children and adults who are hungry. The Cooperative
Feeding Program would like to join forces with you and your friends, church, congregation,
school, university or other group to truly make a difference. You can set an extra
plate at your dinner table that night to remember those who will be going without
food; write a letter to the Editor of your local paper expressing your concern
about hunger in Broward County; send in an extra donation in the name of a friend
or family member who has been blessed.
KEEP
THE DATE - OCTOBER 8TH!
The Cooperative Feeding Program's
third annual "SpeakEasy", a 20's era gala extravaganza will be held at the Signature

BIG
"THANK YOUS"
| EMPTY
BOWLS EVENT RAISES OVER $ 4,500 FOR THE HUNGRY
Thanks to the efforts of the Interfaith Coalition to End Hunger and its
four participating Churches and Temples that host the annual empty bowl dinner
event, a check for $ 4,500 was presented this week to The Cooperative Feeding
Program to feed the hungry of southern Florida.
The participating religious
groups were Temple Etz Chiam, Temple Adath, Or Trinity Lutheran and the River
of Grass Unitarian Universalist Church in Davie.
Every April since 2002,
hand made soup bowls sold at this annual event to symbolize and remind us of the
fact that many people in our community go to bed hungry every day. The Cooperative
Feeding Program, the principal beneficiary of the event, serves close to one million
meals each year through its Community Kitchen and Emergency Pantry programs.
Several
schools also joined in the event this year, including the South Plantation High
School's Leadership Class, which raised $ 1,869 to fight hunger through the sale
of empty bowls they made at the school.
USPS
LETTER CARRIERS DRIVE A GREAT SUCCESS - BUT…
Thanks to the collective efforts on May 14th of 300+ volunteers, the US Postal
Service Letter Carriers and the generosity of the public, The Cooperative Feeding
Program now has more than 65 TONS of food in their warehouse, which was almost
empty last week. The expenses of the collection were generously underwritten by
"Interior Designs by Steven G". www.InteriorDesignsByStevenG.com
The food, which was collected in the 15 post offices in Broward County,
Florida, assigned to benefit The Cooperative Feeding Program by Letter Carriers
Union 2550, is already being distributed to the more than 100 families daily who
come seeking food assistance.
With the 400-500 hot meals we serve each
day plus the emergency food provisions, The Cooperative Feeding Program dispenses
close to 4,000 lbs (2 tons) of food each day which means that the food collected
will only last us about five weeks.
If you would like information on how
to organize a food drive in your community, school, temple or church, please contact
Bruce@FeedingBroward.org.

HUNGER
NEWS
| BROWARD
COUNTY SCHOOLS STAFF HOLD FOOD DRIVE
The administrative staff
of the Broward County Schools Board held a successful food drive this past month
which collected more than 1,200lbs of food for the county's hungry.
The
food drive was held in the "K. C. Wright Administrative Center" on South East
3rd Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where there are approximately 800 employees.
"We chose to help The Cooperative Feeding Program to do something
to help the community", explained Israel Canales, Manager of Administrative Site
Operations for the Broward County Public Schools, and the driving force behind
the food drive. "The motivation for all of us here is the opportunity to participate
within the community".
HUNGER
- FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE HUNGRY AND THE HOMELESS
During
the last few weeks, The Cooperative Feeding Program has been distributing scores
of disposable cameras to our clients who come asking for emergency food and to
the homeless. Their task, in conjunction with National Hunger Awareness Day, is
to show their vision of hunger from the perspective of those who are hungry. This
project is being undertaken in conjunction with the South Florida Sun-Sentinel
and the SNAP Foundation.
This project is being undertaken in conjunction
with the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and the SNAP Foundation www.SNAPFoundation.org
and the photos will run in the Sunday, June 5th Sun Sentinel newspaper
The
photos will be displayed at The Cooperative Feeding Program on June 7th and then
will be available to tour around the region in a traveling presentation. If you
are interested in hosting this educational presentation, please contact Bruce@FeedingBroward.org.
HELP
NEEDED IN PLANTATION!
The Publix Supermarket in Jacaranda Plaza,
Plantation has generously offered to provide The Cooperative Feeding Program with
baked goods. We are seeking volunteers to collect this food on Wednesday or Thursday
mornings and deliver it to The Cooperative Feeding Program by 8:30am, in time
for the breakfast meal in the Community Kitchen. If you can help, please call
Dorothy Abel at (954) 792-2328 or Dorothy@FeedingBroward.org
www.FeedingBroward.org
Please visit The Cooperative Feeding Program's ever-changing website at
www.FeedingBroward.org.
Thanks to the help of Anh Nguyen and Saurian Studio, an excellent California based
web design company www.saurianstudio.com
our web page has new information posted several times a week as well as listing
upcoming events and other features. Please take a look today and let us know what
you think!
AN
URGENT CALL FOR FOOD
Due to a tremendous increase in the demand
for emergency food, The Cooperative Feeding Program is now distributing an average
of 4,000 to 6,000 lbs of food every day. This is a 25% increase over 2004.
PLEASE consider organizing a food drive in your neighborhood, condo, church, temple,
school, club, etc or making a donation to the emergency food fund? We can provide
you with ideas for posters, a list of what is needed, etc, to make it easier for
you to organize the food drive. We can thank the donors and show them how their
food was distributed to the hungry.
If we cannot get more food, we will
have to restrict the amount of food we can distribute. Many needy children and
their families will go to bed hungry in this, the richest country on the planet.
Please contact Bruce@FeedingBroward.org
if you have any questions, or call (954) 792-2328. And, thank you.
