HUNDREDS
OF CHILDREN RECEIVE BACKPACKS FOR SCHOOL
More than 500 children from
economically challenged families have received backpacks and school supplies through
The Cooperative Feeding Program. On July 30th, in the presence of clowns, volunteers
and a disco party, more than 300 children arrived to The Cooperative Feeding Program
to collect their backpack, preparing to start school on August 8th.
Many
people generously supported the backpack program including the Joe Sonken Charitable
Trust, Tiffany Construction Inc., the ACQ Systems Team at American Express Technologies,
and Office Depot, amongst many others. MANY THANKS!
The event was successfully
organized by Irene Janota and Marlene Holder with support from Laura Heshmaty
and eight volunteers from American Express. Our friends at Humana provided health
related information to the families, together with "Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies".
The backpack program will continue on for a few more weeks, hoping to
reach a goal of 800 backpacks. If you would like to help by covering the cost
of a backpack and school supplies, please contact Marlene at (954) 792-2328 or

BROWARD YOUTH LEARN WORK SKILLS BY SERVING THE POOR
Five hundred economically
disadvantaged youth from Broward County finished their first ever job experience
this week as part of the Summer Youth Employment Program.
"Do the best
you can - the first time", responded 15 year old Davon Johnson from Hollywood
when asked what he had learned during the past 7 weeks of the vocation program.
"I never realized that there were so many hungry people out there".
Johnson,
a 10th grader at Hallandale High School, together with eight other 14-18 year
old students, had experienced the real-life challenges of serving the hungry and
the homeless with The Cooperative Feeding Program, a lead agency in Broward County
in the fight against hunger. "You have to come to work with a positive attitude
because if you get like you don't want to be there, you could get fired," warned
the teen.
Organized by WorkForce One with financial support from the Children's
Services Council of Broward County, this is the first year of the Summer Youth
Employment Program. The goal of the program is to "provide eligible youth with
meaningful work to assist them in developing work skills and to enable youth to
assist in making improvements in their communities by performing meaningful tasks".
Each student earns $ 6.15 per hour for a 30-hour week.
APPLY
NOW FOR A FALL 2005 DO SOMETHING GRANT!
Young people have the energy,
creativity, and motivation to make changes in the world. By giving grants to young
people, this allows them to unleash their power and turn their ideas into action.
The Cooperative Feeding Program would like to encourage young people to design
a project regarding the issue of hunger in Broward County. "Do Something" awards
$500 grants to change-makers and potential community leaders age 18 and under
who identify problems in their communities, and then create game plans to do something
to change their world. Young people can apply on their own behalves, or on behalf
of a group or team. If you work with youth, encourage them to apply and make a
change in their community.
