Offers Minimally Invasive Outpatient Weight-Loss Procedure
 An innovative, safe, and effective intervention is now available at Broward Health Weston for obese adult patients who have repeatedly failed more conservative weight reduction alternatives such as supervised diet, exercise, and behavior-modification programs. Increases in obesity are associated with dramatic increases in conditions such as type 2 diabetes and asthma. In addition, a recent study reported that obesity causes more deleterious effects on health than either smoking or problem drinking. The increase in chronic health conditions caused by obesity is comparable to that seen in 20 years of aging.
Given the aggressive increase in rate of obesity, experts predict that it will continue to escalate as a national health crisis. “The LAP-BAND System offers a viable solution to safely treat severely obese individuals on a broad basis,” states Natassia Orr, Administrator, Broward Health Weston. “This would significantly reduce or resolve the health conditions this patient group suffers from and drive down the massive costs of treating this epidemic, which already exceeds $200 million on an annual basis.”
