REGISTER
YOUR CHILD TODAY FOR THE
SAFE START AQUATICS PROGRAM
Safe
Start is a swim program that gives children water safety skills to survive. It
is a comprehensive six-week program that involves 10-minute per day lessons, five
days a week. Children as young as 6 months old work one-on-one with a certified
Safe Start instructor to master the aquatic survival techniques. No child is ever
thrown into the water. Instead, they are safely guided through the learning process,
mastering the back float position, as well as resting and breathing. For children
12 months and older, Safe Start teaches a survival sequence of swimming, rolling
to float, flipping back over, and continue swimming to safety. Once skilled, children
practice these techniques fully clothed. For further information, visit Aquatics,
then SAFE START link on our website ymcaspbc.org.
Call or visit the YMCA to register your child for this safety first program.

Health
Line: Benefits of Aquatic Physical Therapy
Do
you suffer from back or joint pain, leg weakness, balance problems, or are you
recovering from recent surgery? Aquatic therapy may be a very good way to start.
After injury, surgery, or immobilization, aquatic physical therapy helps movement
by reducing gravity forces with the buoyancy of the water, hydrostatic pressure,
and warm water temperatures. People unable to perform weight-bearing exercise
may begin rehabilitation earlier in the pool due to the decrease in force of gravity
on joints. Aquatic therapy is also beneficial for improving balance, coordination,
and agility.
There are physical properties of water that provide
a favorable environment for exercise. Buoyancy acts to support weak joints and
can provide both assistance, and progressive resistance to movement in water.
Compression or hydrostatic pressure assists in the stabilization of weak joints
as well as helping to decrease swelling and improve circulation. In chest-deep
water, there is an increase in the hydrostatic pressure on the wall of the chest
and abdomen during breathing.
Aquatic exercises can train the breathing
component and are beneficial to people who have respiratory problems. Warm water
promotes muscle relaxation and helps reduce muscle guarding and pain, providing
a comfortable and relaxing environment for early exercise.
Once the individual
is able to tolerate weight-bearing activities, they may progress to land-based
exercises or return to their regular daily activities.
